Today the European Union has achieved its original goal of securing longterm peace in Europe. War within the EU has become all but inconceivable. Many citizens are asking why the association of states which is the European Union is still necessary in the 21st century.
"Hi! Europe calling!" aims to answer this question.
Europe sets some of the highest standards in areas such as consumer protection, product safety and education. The European Union is all at once the biggest single market, the largest community of exporters and the largest contributor of development aid in the world.
Many Europeans are unaware of the European Union's resonance in other parts of the world. The former Chilean President, Ricardo Lagos Escobar, was justified when he complained:
"You Europeans just worry about Europe and don't notice how important you've become for the rest of the world."
