The European Union is dismayed that violence has continued in Guinea since the President's appointment of a Prime Minister and again bitterly regrets the loss of human lives. It condemns the violent crackdown on demonstrations and regrets the declaration of a state of siege. The restrictions on freedoms, especially on radio broadcasts, constitute a step backwards in the implementation of the undertakings given by the Government in connection with the consultations held under the Cotonou Agreement.
The European Union, together with ECOWAS, appeals to the Government to apply faithfully the agreement signed with the trades unions. It also calls on all parties to resolve the crisis through dialogue and to renounce violence.
