The Federal Republic’s tallest buildings are in Frankfurt am Main, and the city’s airport can pride itself in being the largest on the European mainland. Many great scholars have emerged from Frankfurt, the most famous being Johann Wolfgang Goethe. Nevertheless, Hesse is very down-to-earth and by no means disposed to storming great heights. The people in this heartland state tend more towards understatement.
