When opening the international conference in Bremen “Work on E-Justice” Federal Minister of Justice Brigitte Zypries said today that “Modern information and communication technology makes the justice system more efficient and helps citizens and businesses seeking justice get help more quickly and easily”. “In a European area of freedom, security and justice with porous borders, information technology-based support of the justice sector must not end at the internal borders. Today’s conference is sending the signal that in Europe we are cooperating more closely in this area as well”, continued Ms Zypries.
In the two-day event, around 500 experts and other interested participants from Europe, the USA and Asia will discuss and analyze the opportunities offered by the cross-border support of the justice sector through information and communication technology. Within the framework of the German EU Presidency, the Conference has been organized by the Federal Ministry of Justice and the Länder justice ministries.
Presentations and panel discussions will be dedicated to four overarching thematic units regarding the use of IT in the justice sector on the European level:
“A current study shows that all Member States of the EU have the technical means at their disposal for using electronic communication in judicial proceedings. Hence it is now time to establish the basis and standards for using e-justice at the European level. In view of the multitude of languages, legal systems and technological standards in Europe, this is an ambitious project, which we are undertaking for the benefit of citizens and businesses alike“, said Ms Zypries.
