„More Light!“ by Anny und Sibel Öztürk

Lichtring

During the German presidency of the EU Council, the centre of the EU quarter in Brussels, the Rond-Point Schuman, will be turned into a “work of art.” The Goethe-Institut and the Foreign Ministry have decided to bring “More Light!” to Brussels by selecting the proposal by Anny and Sibel Öztürk. Born in 1970 and 1975, these Turkish-German artists grew up in the vicinity of Frankfurt am Main and graduated from the “Städelschule” [School of Fine Arts] in Frankfurt.  With this installation, the acoustic activities at the Rond-Point Schuman will be translated by microphones into a spectacular choreography of light.

A light steel structure, 43m in diameter, holds a group of light pipes arranged vertically to each other.  The open structure surrounds the Rond-Point and negotiates between the traffic area, the inner square and the adjoining buildings.  The varying colours and patterns of the light sequences of the installation are computer-controlled, with the constantly changing background noise of the square acting as the triggering impulse:  the more intensive and dynamic the action at the square, the more colourful the light spectrum and the faster the changing effect.  In addition, passers-by can use a touchpad installed in the inner square to trigger light signals.

The artwork and the action on the square can be followed also on the Internet while the installation is up.

With their  installation „More Light!“ Anny and Sibel Öztürk make the energy of people and vehicles that go by the Rond-Point Schuman every day visible as the dynamic heartbeat of the capital of Europe.

The exhibition will run from 18 January to 15 April 2007
