Grand Europe Festival of the Federal Government in Berlin

The Deputy Spokesman for the Federal Government, Thomas Steg, announces:

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome, the German government is organising a grand festival on the 24th and 25th of March in Berlin. An appealing mix of music, culture and information awaits the citizens on both days. The Europe Festival adds lustre to the informal summit meeting of the Heads of State and Government of the EU Member States, taking place on the 25th of March.

“Night of Beauty” in the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (National Museums in Berlin)

On Saturday the 24th of March, the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (National Museums in Berlin) open their doors for a “Night of Beauty”. Starting 6 p.m. and lasting far into the evening, the “Night of Beauty” invites spectators to the Museumsinsel and the Kulturforum to behold selected works of art from the several epochs of European art history.  Literature, music and the fine arts will be entering into unexpected coalitions.

European Club Night

In addition, the European club night starts late Saturday night. On the initiative of the Club Commission Berlin (Association of Club, Party and Event Organisers of Berlin, reg. ass.), more than 30 Berlin clubs will party into the small hours of the following day of the 50th anniversary. DJ's, rock bands and live projects from all EU Member States will be represented.

Big Open Air Event

On Sunday the 25th of March, the German government will celebrate around the Brandenburg Gate. Appearing will be Italy’s number one rock singer Gianna Nannini, Berlin rock band MIA, Outlandish from Denmark and many others. In between concerts, the diversified programme will provide information on the “Voices of Europe”. A host of street artists and theatre groups from all over Europe will encourage audiences to participate and provide off-stage entertainment.

Furthermore, visitors will be able to inform themselves on all there is to know about the EU and its Members in over 70 information tents. Alongside the German Government, the 27 Member States as well as numerous European enterprises and initiatives will present themselves from a European perspective. Within the course of the festival, the information tour “Europe turns 50” will start, stopping in at 52 German cities in the weeks to come.

The festival will be enriched by the Tag der Ein- und Ausblicke (day of insights and outlooks) of the German Bundestag. This day will revolve around the 50th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome and the supporting role of the German parliament within the EU Presidency.

The Europe Festival will, of course, also have culinary specialties on offer. On the Festmeile, the stands of the bakers’ guild, for instance, will be selling sweet and hearty pastries baked to traditional recipe from all 27 Member States.
