Jean Monnet, the man who laid the foundations for the European Union, knew what Europe meant to the world in cultural terms. Europe's roots extend as far as Jerusalem, Athens and Rome, and stretch over 3000 years of history to Strasbourg, where the sessions of the European Parliament provide a stage for cultural diversity.
