The Better Regulation initiative was launched by the EU Commission in spring 2005.
It is currently focusing on four key questions:
- What are the social, economic and ecological consequences of EU legislation? This is the subject of scientific studies, discussions with concerned parties and public consultations via the internet.
- How can existing EU legislation be simplified? More than 200 pieces of EU legislation are currently being considered for modification or withdrawal.
- How can the EU improve its legislative procedure? Parliament, Council and Commission have agreed, for example, to cooperate more closely in drawing up their work programmes.
- How can the costs of bureaucracy be assessed and reduced? Lower administrative costs as a result of EU legislation are an important indicator for the impact of Better Regulation.
