Air services between the European Community and Malaysia have been placed on a sound legal basis by means of an agreement. The document was signed under the auspices of the German EU Council Presidency by the Federal Minister of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs, Wolfgang Tiefensee, the EU Transport Commissioner, Jacques Barrot, and the Malaysian Minister of Transport, Sri Chan Koy Choy.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, which took place on the fringes of the meeting of EU Ministers of Transport in Brussels, Mr Tiefensee said: “Air transport is an important basis for the relations that the European Union and its Member States have with Malaysia. It links people and cultures and helps to intensify economic relations. From the perspective of the European Union, too, this agreement marks a crucial advance in external aviation policy.”
The agreement gives Community air carriers easier access to air routes between the Member States of the European Community and Malaysia. After Singapore, Malaysia is now the second ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) country with which such an agreement has been signed.
