The Federal Ministry of Finance and the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) are hosting a conference entitled “Fiscal Policy Challenges in Europe” on 22 and 23 March 2007. The conference will cover issues regarding the quality of public finances and the role played by fiscal policy in the context of the Lisbon Strategy. Taking place under the German presidency of the European Union, the conference provides a visible contribution to the discussion of practical and theoretical issues that are becoming increasingly important in the realm of European fiscal policy.
Speakers will include Peer Steinbrück, the Federal Minister of Finance, Joaquín Almunia, the Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs, Jürgen Stark, Member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank, as well as Thomas Mirow, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Finance. Roberto Perotti (from Bocconi University) and Vito Tanzi (former Director of the Fiscal Affairs Department at the International Monetary Fund) will launch the academic discussion with keynote speeches.
