At the invitation of the Federal Minister of the Interior, Dr. Wolfgang Schäuble, the EU Ministers responsible for the Public Service and Public Administration will meet in the framework of the German EU Council Presidency in Berlin on 22 June 2007. The meeting will also be attended by Vice-President Siim Kallas, the EU Commissioner responsible for Administrative Affairs, Audit and Anti-fraud. The informal meeting will focus on the challenges to the public service in the European Union which result from demographic change.
The informal co-operation of the Ministers and Directors General responsible for the Public Service and Public Administration in the EU Member States and at the European Commission serves to exchange experience on relevant developments and best practices. The network provides important impulses for defining goals and setting priorities in the EU Member States.
While the Directors General meet under each Council Presidency, the informal minis-terial conferences normally take place at biannual intervals.
The ministers will have an exchange of views on the challenges which result from demographic change and the need to reform the public service systems in the EU Member States in order to take account of changed social structures. In this context, they will discuss aspects of public service law such as modern employment conditions and flexible working time models, modern remuneration systems but also modern administrative structures which make it possible to provide the citizens with services that take account of demographic developments while employing less staff.
