Chancellor Merkel to chair the EU-Canada Summit

The President of the European Council, Chancellor Angela Merkel, will chair the EU-Canada Summit which she will open on Monday, 4 June 2007, at 5.40 p.m. Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the Prime Minister of Canada Stephen Harper, the Canadian Minister for the Environment John Baird, the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, EU Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner as well as the European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana will also participate in the meeting at the Federal Chancellery.

Items on the summit agenda will be the relations between the European Union and Canada, economic cooperation and climate and energy policy.

• A photo session is scheduled for the start of the summit at 5.40 p.m. (fam-ily photograph, Foyer on the ground floor).
• A photo session is scheduled for the beginning of the working session at 5.50 p.m. (International Conference Hall).
• Chancellor Merkel, President of the European Commission Barroso and Prime Minister Harper will hold a joint press conference at around 6.50 p.m. The press conference will be broadcast live on the Internet at www.eu2007.de.
