Chancellor Merkel to chair the EU-Japan Summit

The President of the European Council, Chancellor Angela Merkel, will chair the EU-Japan Summit which she will open on Tuesday, 5 June 2007, at 5.10 p.m. Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso and the European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana will also participate in the meeting at the Federal Chancellery.

Items on the summit agenda will be the relations between the European Union and Japan, economic cooperation, climate and energy policy, protection of intellectual property and innovation policy.

A meeting between the participants in the summit and the EU-Japan Business Dialogue Round Table is scheduled for the start of the conference at 5.25 p.m.

Business leaders from the European Union and Japan use this forum every year to develop recommendations for intensifying economic cooperation between the EU and Japan. The Chairmen of the Round Table Baron Georges Jacobs, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the pharmaceutical company UCB, and Tadashi Okamura, Chairman of the Board of the Toshiba Corporation, will present the recommendations of this year's meeting of the EU-Japan Business Dialogue Round Table to the summit participants.

The Chancellor will receive the Japanese Prime Minister in the Federal Chancellery before the start of the summit at 4.30 p.m. in the light of the forthcoming G8 Summit which will be at the centre of the discussions.
