Under the German EU Council Presidency, the Federal Minister of Economics and Technology, Michael Glos, invites you to attend the opening event for the new period of assistance as part of EU regional and structural policy from 2007 to 2013

The event will focus in particular on the new member states which can now take part for the first time in the regular EU structural assistance programmes as of 2007. In cooperation with the EU Commission, a discussion with prominent panelists will provide information on success stories in EU structural policy to date and the future outlook.
Besides the Federal Minister of Economics and Technology, Michael Glos, and EU Commissioner for Regional Policy, Danuta Hübner, other discussion guests will include the Polish Minister for Regional Development, Grazyna Gesicka, and her Czech counterpart, Jiri Cunek, as well as Minister-Presidents Edmund Stoiber and Georg Milbradt. Ministers and state secretaries from Bulgaria, Hungary, Greece, Austria, Lithuania, Latvia, Spain, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia have promised to attend.
Following on the panel discussion, signatures will be placed under the national strategic reference frameworks for Germany and Lithuania, which specify the goals and fields of activity of EU structural assistance. The operational programmes setting out regional development strategies for Saxony, Bavaria and other federal states as well as seven Austrian regions will also be adopted with the various minister-presidents in attendance.
After the opening ceremony, the Federal Minister of Economics and Technology, Michael Glos, and EU Commissioner, Danuta Hübner, will be available to answer your questions at a press conference.
This will be followed by an informational tour with Dr Joachim Wuermeling, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, along with several ministers from the new member states and Dirk Ahner, Director General for Regional Policy at the European Commission. The tour will focus on showcasing various EU-assisted projects in Bavaria, the Czech Republic and Saxony. It will end in Dresden on 10 May in the afternoon. You are welcome to take part.
