The EU welcomes today’s successful conclusion of the first session of the Preparatory Committee of the 2010 NPT Review Conference (Vienna, 30 April – 11 May).
Unjustifiable objections raised by Iran caused a considerable delay in the adoption of the agenda for that meeting. The EU regrets that this led to a loss of time and prevented the smooth start of the new NPT review cycle which the EU had been working strenuously to achieve.
However, the EU is encouraged by the positive and constructive spirit which prevailed throughout the substantive discussions in this first session. This testifies to the commitment of the overwhelming majority of NPT States Parties to maintain the authority and integrity of the NPT and to contribute to the strengthening of the Treaty regime.
The EU has actively contributed to the deliberations of the session by submitting detailed views and proposals on all three areas of review: nuclear disarmament, nuclear non-proliferation and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. The EU trusts that the contributions it has made will be built upon in the work performed during the review cycle.
The first session of the Preparatory Committee was just the first step on the way to the 2010 Review Conference. The EU will continue to promote and work for the successful outcome of that conference. We are committed to making a real contribution to a structured and balanced review of the Treaty and to helping build a consensus in 2010.
