The Presidency congratulates President John Kufuor of Ghana on his election as new Chairperson of the African Union.
In recent years the African Union has become a major international player. The contribution it makes to strengthening democracy and stability and especially to resolving conflicts is of great importance for the whole African continent. Its role in promoting regional integration and economic development in Africa is of equal significance.
With the current crises in Somalia and Sudan, this year once again much is expected of the African Union and its Chairperson.
The European Union emphasizes its willingness also in future to work with the African Union and its new Chairperson closely and constructively in a spirit of partnership and mutual trust.
