We very much welcome the fact that crude oil supplies to the European Union have resumed.
Disputes over energy matters should always be settled in an orderly, non-confrontational manner, with the help of arbitration, for example. The relevant instruments are provided for in the Energy Charter.
Regardless of the differences between the two countries, the clear stance adopted by the EU on this matter is likely to have helped ensure the rapid resumption of supplies.
Furthermore, should any difficulties arise again in future, we expect to be consulted in good time.
The energy relationships which Member States of the European Union have with their neighbours must remain predictable and reliable. This also means that existing commitments to supply must be honoured.
Building on a basis of reliability and partnership, the EU will intensify its bilateral dialogue with Russia on energy. The upcoming re-negotiation of a partnership and cooperation agreement will provide the necessary framework for this.
