"Europe – the blue star"

Europe is celebrating cultural diversity – celebrate with us!

"Europe – the blue star"
Date: 17.06.2007
Venue: Berlin

Short description

A fanfare will open this day of European culture at 3 p.m. inviting Europeans from everywhere to Europe – the blue star to get to know their neighbours better.

How do Slovakians feel about Europe? What do kids in Finland dream of? And what do Romanians make of fraternity? Europe – the blue star invites every European to experience and rediscover the continent – via an extra-special exhibition of paintings and thoughts on Europe as well as a diverse musical program.

Hopes and visions of Europeans of different origins and backgrounds will be presented in colourful pictures, providing an insight into how they envision our continent. The inspiring thoughts of 100 committed Europeans, such as Gesine Schwan, Rem Kohlhaas, John Le Carré and Franz Vranitzky, will be exhibited and read out by famous German actors such as Ulrich Matthes, Boris Aljinovic and Dietrich Mattausch. These European thoughts and pictures won’t just touch can be retained and taken away. On the occasion of the event, the newspaper “Der Tagesspiegel” is exclusively publishing a supplement containing the 100 thoughts. In co-operation with Radio Paradiso the thoughts will also be available as podcasts – Europe in the eye, Europe in the ear.

Young international musicians will play twelve concerts, providing a musical understanding of Europe’s countries and traditions – from Denmark to Romania and Portugal, from the baroque era to jazz and pop.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Germany’s Foreign Secretary, will open the highlight of this European cultural event: a gala concert in co-operation with young.euro.classic – Europäischer Musik Sommer, starting at 8 p.m. in Berlin’s Konzerthaus. The program includes a performance by Young Sound Forum of Central Europe orchestra (Junges Klangforum Mitte Europa), conducted by Sebastian Weigle, and featuring artists such as Montserrat Caballé, composer Moritz Eggert, and actor Ulrich Matthes. Another highlight of the evening will be three young composers from Germany, Slovenia and Portugal, who will each present their personal version of the European hymn.

The project Europe – the blue star is realized on behalf of the Federal Foreign Office of Germany on the occasion of  the finale of Germany’s EU presidency.
