Monday demonstrations and microchips, porcelain and Porsches, paddle steamers and Radeberger beer – Saxony has a chequered past and looks to the future with optimism. In 1989, Leipzig and Dresden were the starting points for the peaceful revolution that culminated in German unification. Today, American microchip giant AMD operates production plants in “Silicon Saxony” and tourists from all over the world travel to the Land on the Elbe.
