Those who deal with European policy on a daily basis soon become accustomed to using a large number of specialized words and expressions which the general public does not understand. To help you overcome this problem, we would like to refer you to the European Commission's "Eurojargon" guide. The guide offers explanations to semi-technical terms used by the media and those active in EU institutions. It casts light on the phenomenon of comitology, describes Community method and the Lisbon Strategy, lists the Maastricht and Copenhagen criteria, and explains in more than 70 other entries the difference between a supranational and a transnational agreement.
"Eurojargon" does not include purely legal or technical terms. These can be found in a separate EU glossary containing around 220 terms relating to European integration and the institutions and activities of the European Union. The definitions are available in eleven official EU languages: Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish and Spanish.
